Latham-Dorland V. McEwen "Bud", 86, of Latham, a life member of the Latham Fire Department died Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at his home with his loving family at his side. Born and educated in Parishville, NY, he was the son of the late Ancel and Goldie McEwen and the loving husband to the late Patricia McEwen, she died in 2003. Mr. McEwen worked at the Al Tech Specialty Steel Corporation for many years, he retired in 1987, he also worked part time at the former Sage Estate as the grounds keeper. He has been a member of the Latham Fire Department since 1958, he was the longest active member of the department. He was very active in the Fire Company including the Fire Police and he received the Fireman of the Year award. Bud enjoyed traveling to Florida, gardening, fishing and hunting. He is survived by his loving children Diane Comtois and her husband Robert of Tupper Lake, Dennis McEwen and his wife Dawn of Troy, Shirley Strawn and her husband Don of Wauchula, Fl., Wendy Burgess and her husband Robert of Shaftsbury, Vt., his cherished grandchildren Ryan Kochanowski (Sarah), Megan Gonzalez (Jorge), Morgan Kochanowski, Alison Wormuth (Kyle), Michael Comtois, Shana Dennison, Andrea Mason (Stephen), Allison Schneider (Greg), his great grandchildren Zachary Mason, Kirsten Mason, Cayden Dennison, Nina Comtois, Connor Comtois, Garret Wormuth, Hudson Wormuth, his sisters Juanita Hanson and Judy Ashley and his longtime special companion Carol Chabot, also survived by several caring and compassionate nieces and nephews. Dorland was predeceased by his five sisters. Dorland's family wishes to thank the community hospice and his aides for the care and compassion given to him. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 9:00 am in the Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham with Rev. John Phillippe officiating. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7 pm. Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands. Contributions may be made to the Latham Fire Department, 226 Old Loudon Road, Latham, NY 12110.
