MARY U. GELSTON
Latham- Mary U. Gelston, 70 of Latham, beloved wife of James A. Gelston for 47 years, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2015 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's, in Albany.
Born in Plattsburgh on February 11, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Elsie (Carter) Underwood. She was a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh with a B.S. degree and West Virginia University where she received her master's degree. Mary enjoyed gardening, reading, but most of all looking after her family especially her 4 grandsons which was her first priority.
Mary was a Reading Specialist in many area schools as part of the S.U.N.Y Research Foundation in Albany. At one time she was an elementary school teacher in Spencerport, NY and Morgantown, WV. She also substituted in the North Colonie School District for many years. Mary was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Latham.
In addition to her beloved husband, she is survived by her loving children: Amy K. (Paul M.) Baccaro of Latham and James G. (Tracy M. Helf) Gelston of Cohoes. Her four cherished grandsons; Ryan P., Michael J. and Nicholas J. Baccaro and James W. Gelston as well as her sister: Janice U. (Howard P.) LaFave of Boonville, NY, Sister in Law: Virginia K. (John) LePere of Brewster, NY, Brother in Law: Donald E. (Marie R.) Gelston of Stockbridge, MA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday, December 17, 2015 from 4:00- 6:00 pm at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham.
Mary's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham with Fr. Geoffrey Burke officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Mary's memory to the Hope Club, 1 Penny Lane, Latham, NY 12110 or the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave, Menands, NY 12204
