Obituary of Monica P. Laney

MONICA P. LANEY Latham- Monica P. Laney, beloved mother and friend, passed away on February 28, 2014 after suffering a massive stroke. She was 76 years old. Monica, daughter of the late Leon and Bertha Babbitt Prouty, grew up in the Adams Center, New York area and was a postgraduate of Adams Center Central School. Before her lengthy career with New York State, she worked for the Jefferson County Historical Society in Watertown, NY; and Harbor Marina in Henderson, NY. Prior to her 2002 retirement, Monica was a Senior Personnel Administrator with the Department of Transportation; but she had also worked for the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation and a brief tour with the Department of Corrections. Monica loved her family and her country. She donated and/or participated in several educational, conservation, genealogical, and animal welfare organizations. Most importantly, she lived life on her terms and maintained her independence in later years despite suffering a stroke in 2009 and receiving a diagnosis of metastatic colon cancer in 2013. Survivors include her daughter, Nicole Check of Port Washington, NY; her son, Patrick Laney of San Francisco, CA; her feline companions Little Willie and Kitty Girl; her sister, Patricia Ryder of Fayetteville, NC; and several cousins. There will be no funeral; a memorial service will be conducted in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (mohawkhumanesociety.org) in her name.
