RICHARD E. MARTEL
Albany-Richard E. "Marty" Martel, 65 of Albany, died Saturday, February 2, 2013 at his home in Albany.
Born in Somerville, MA, he was the son of the late Richard Eugene and Florence (Caouette) Martel. He was a 1965 graduate of Shaker High School and attended Hudson Valley Community College and Sacramento State University. He served during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Navy on both the USS Oriskany and the USS Enterprise. He was awarded the Excellence Award for his bravery during the bombing of the USS Oriskany. Marty was employed as operation manager for the West Side Transport Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for many years and retired in 2007. He formerly was the manager at Union Beverage Center in Schenectady. He loved to play the Clarinet and Saxophone. Marty was an avid reader and loved history and watching the history channel. He was a cyclist and loved riding his Gold Wing motorcycle.
Survivors include his siblings Maureen C. (Ron Hollander) Martel of Hastings-on-Hudson, Denise M. (Tony) Gorman of Loudonville and Bruce A. (Joanne Miller) Martel of Churchtown NY
He was the Uncle of Alexis (David) Elhadj, Adam (Jackie) Gorman, Amelia (Laith) Kalamchi, Naomi Martel-Hollander, Lorna Martel-Hollander, Matthew (Anna) Hollander and Michael (Beth) Hollander, Great-Uncle of Vivienne Elhadj, Liam Gorman, Lucas and Esme Hollander.
Funeral Services will be private at the convenience of the family from the Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home 149 Old Loudon Road Latham.
There will be no calling hours.
Interment will be with his parents in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands.
