WALTER H. STONE
Latham- Walter H. Stone, 94 of Perry Avenue in Latham, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 20, 2012.
He was born to Carl and Cecilia Stone, on January 5, 1918 in Providence Rhode Island. Walt graduated from Providence Central High School where he was an outstanding athlete. Participating in both football & track, he received Honorable Mention as a running back in football and All State in track. He was the state champion in the javelin.
Walt spent 5 years in the army proudly serving his country. Of those 5 years, 3 were overseas in the jungles of New Guinea. As a Staff Sergeant, he earned the Distinguished Badge, the Pacific Campaign Ribbon, and 3 battle stars. These 3 stars represented his participation in 3 major campaigns.
After returning from the war, Walt married Charlotte McLeod and went to work for the Railway Express Agency. His employment with REA lasted 30 years bringing him 1st to Utica, NY and finally to Latham. He later was employed by Sears & Roebuck, retiring in 1981 after 12 years.
Walt was a member of the Colonie Elks 2192 for many years. He has been a longtime member of the Calvary United Methodist Church. Walt was an avid golfer both here and in Destin, FL where he and Charlotte wintered for many years.
Walt is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Charlotte. He also leaves 3 daughters; Marjorie (David) Barrows, Charlotte (Jerry) Aiken and Cynthia (Mario) Alaia along with 7 grandchildren; Jessica (Michael) Salmon, Scott (Amy) Kendall, Cory (Laura) Aiken, Beau (Vicki) Burrows, Jennifer (Sean) LaDieu, Eric (Jenn) Kendall & Kirsten Alaia.
The family would like to thank the VA hospital, especially the staff of 8B and the Hospice Team who provided him with such wonderful care.
Memorial services will be held Thursday December 27, 2012 at 11:00 am at Calvary United Methodist Church, 15 Ridge Place Latham.
