RITA N. EMPIE CHILDS
Latham- Rita N. Empie Childs passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2012 in the comfort of her Latham home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Schenectady, NY on July 30, 1927 to Henrietta and Robert P. Empie. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, William H. Childs.
Rita graduated from Draper High School in 1945. She was employed by NY Bell from 1945-1948. She married her husband on September 26, 1948. She worked for the family restaurant, Empies, on Route 7 from 1948-1952. After raising her children she was employed in the Justice Court at the Town of Colonie from 1968 until her retirement in 1986.
Rita is survived by her two sons, William R. Childs (Karen) and Keith E. Childs (Beverley); also her "surrogate son" Kent (Buck) Cummings. Grandmother of seven; Sandra Carpenter (Loren), Emerson Childs (Amber), Kimberly Dean (Nicholaus), Jennifer Smith (Jeffrey), Morgan Wilson (Richard), William D.T. Childs (Bethany) and James Childs. Great-grandmother of thirteen; Tiffany and Stephanie Carpenter, Autumn and Summer Childs, Aaron and Kaitlyn Dean, Austin, Benjamin and Connor Smith, Mikayla and Hunter Wilson, Liam and Matthew Childs. She is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister- Lois E. Cummings and her brother- Robert A. Empie.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to The Community Hospice, Inc. or the Epilepsy Foundation of NENY, 3 Washington Square, Albany NY 12205.
The family wishes to expresses their deepest gratitude to Dr. John Ferraro and the caring staff at NYOH in Latham, as well as the staff at The Community Hospice, Inc.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday August 17, 2012 from 4-7 pm at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham.
Interment will take place in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
