ELVIRA BERNARD Latham- Elvira "Vera" Bernard, 90 a resident of Emeritus at Colonie Manor for the past year, passed away on November 6, 2010 in the care of the staff of Schuyler Ridge Health Care in Clifton Park. Born in Terricella Segura, Italy in 1920, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Rosa (DiConstantino) Ventrella. She came to this country in 1923. She and her family settled in Livermore Falls, Maine and she was a graduate of Livermore Falls High School. During World War II, Vera worked as a clerk for International Paper Company. It was in April of 1946 she married Norman Bernard. The two shared a blessed union prior to his passing in 2005. Before retiring to Laham, Vera and her husband had lived in Ticonderoga, NY, Cranston, RI and Corinth, NY. Elvira was a former member of the Colonie Elks #2192 Ladies Auxillary. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and bowling and was a member of the Latham Senior Citizens bowling league. She was also a communicant of St. Ambrose Church. She is survived by her loving children; Norma (James) Zambardino of Latham, NY, Arthur (Thespina) Bernard of Bernardsville, NJ, Mary (Mark) Haley of Plattsburgh, NY and; her cherished grandchildren: James Zambardino, Amy Tonovitz, Alexander Bernard, Jennifer D'Angelo, Michael Haley and Dan Haley, her sister Ann Sullivan of Middleboro, MA, She is also survived by three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother: Edgidio Ventrella, and two sisters Mary Nemi and Domenica "Minnie" Rea. In keeping with her wishes there will be no visitation A celebration of Elvira's life will be held on Monday November 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ambrose Church 347 Old Loudon Rd. Latham with Rev. Francis DuBois officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church from 10:15 a.m. until the start of the Mass. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, Livermore Falls, ME at the convenience of the family. Those who wish may make contributions to the Community Hospice 295 Valley View Boulevard, Rensselaer, NY 12144 in Elvira's memory.
