Obituary of John R. Flavin
JOHN R. FLAVIN
AVERILL PARK – John R. Flavin, 64 years old of Averill Park, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away suddenly on May 15th, 2024 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. Born on July 10th, 1959, he was the eighth child and only son of the late John and Agnes (Flanagan) Flavin.
John was raised in Averill Park and graduated high school in 1980. In his early days he was a Golden Glove Champion and went on to become a professional boxer, training under Bob Miller and Lou Duva. Memorable accomplishments include sparring with Mike Tyson, defeating a US Olympian in front of a sold-out Albany Armory crowd, and helping prepare a heavy weight contender for his title bout with Larry Holmes.
John worked as a dedicated professional truck driver. He was currently employed by David Browe Paving and had previously worked for Shaker Flats Landscaping, Callanan Industries, and Bonded Concrete.
John was a lifetime Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed spending time with friends at his home overlooking the lake. John was the life of every party and was affectionately known by most as Uncle John. John never missed a chance to help someone in need, humans and animals alike. He was always ready to act, including bravely rescuing horses from a barn fire. His greatest pride and joy however, was his large Irish family, especially his granddaughters, Giselle Agnes and Loudon Alice. He will be deeply missed but forever loved in the hearts of those whom he cherished.
John is survived by his wife Doria Moore, his daughter Danielle Flavin, his son John D. (Alisse) Flavin, his granddaughters Giselle Agnes Flavin and Loudon Alice Flavin, and his sisters Anne (Richard) Ahlborn, Mary (Wayne) Bump, Patricia (Albert) Maiello, Vivian (John) Tomaski, Jacqueline Hankle, Michele (Frenchie) St. Pierre, and Helen (Bruce) Wicks. Also survived by twenty nieces and nephews.
In addition to his late parents, John is predeceased by his brother-in-law James Hankle and niece Bridget Maiello.
