HELEN D. RICHMOND

LATHAM - Helen (Dyer) Richmond, 97 of Latham, beloved wife of the late John A. Richmond, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 12th, 2023. Helen’s never-ending kindness and grace made her an inspiration to all who knew her.

Born in Colchester, VT on January 10, 1926, "in the middle of a blizzard" as she often mentioned, she was the daughter of the late John R. and the late Mildred (Reynolds) Dyer. Helen married John A. Richmond in April 1953, and they enjoyed more than 57 years together until his passing in 2010. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her son, John D. "Jack" Richmond. Helen is also predeceased by her sisters Catherine McNally, Frances Corron, and Barbara Corron, and her brothers John Dyer and George Dyer. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Helen attended St. Bridget's School in Watervliet, NY, before moving to Plattsburgh, NY, where she graduated from St. John's Academy. She then graduated from Plattsburgh State Teachers College in 1947.

A longtime resident of Latham, NY, Helen lived in the home she and John had built in 1956. She retired from the North Colonie School District in 1990, after many years as an elementary school teacher. She is most remembered for teaching third grade at Blue Creek School, and a highlight in retirement was attending luncheons with the retired “Blue Creekers.” After retiring, she also enjoyed camping in Warrensburg, where she and John made many new friends.

Helen was a proud member of the Mohawk Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution. After joining in 1993, she served as recording secretary from 1995 until 2008. She also served on the DAR Board of Directors in 2011 and was a member of the nominating committee from 2020 to 2023. Helen was also a faithful communicant at St. Ambrose Church in Latham for more than 70 years.

Helen’s family would like to thank the staffs at Ingersoll Place in Niskayuna and Eddy Village Green in Cohoes for their kindness and compassion as they cared for her in her final years.
