Shanley, Sylvia A.

Sylvia A. Shanley, 92, passed away on February 22, 2017, at Cape Coral Hospital, Cape Coral, Florida after a short illness.

The daughter of the late John and Josephine (Cuddihy) Zimmer, Sylvia was born on August 23, 1924, in Troy, New York. Sylvia is survived by her loving husband Gerald T. Shanley of North Fort Myers, her son David (Rebecca) Shanley of Latham, NY and her favorite grand dog Kona. She was predeceased by her siblings Polly, Edward, Eugene, Doris and Bill and is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

Sylvia graduated from Troy High School in 1942. During World War II, Sylvia was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, NY as an industrial draftsman, a real life Rosie the Riveter. After working at GE for nine years, Sylvia left to become a cannon designer for the U.S. Army at the Watervliet Arsenal. Sylvia met the love of her life, Gerald, at the Watervliet Arsenal. Sylvia and Gerald were married on May 11, 1963. After "retiring" from the Arsenal in 1963, Sylvia became a stay at home Mom for her beloved son, David. After Gerald's retirement, Sylvia and Gerald split their time between their Florida Winter home in North Fort Myers and their summer home on the Great Sacandaga Lake in Broadalbin, NY. Sylvia was very proud of her 20 year career at GE and the Watervliet Arsenal. Sylvia got to have it all. Sylvia will be missed by all for her loving kindness, quick wit and prodigious letter writing.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 8 Center St. P.O. Box 23 Broadalbin, NY 12025.
