To all of the Gutierrez family, in New York, Los Angeles, Teocaltiche Jalisco and many places in between. We have lost one of our best. Tio Carlos was a role model and inspiration to so many of us. Your intelligence, work ethic, kindness, quick wit, and easy smile will not be forgotten. God bless you in heaven. Give a great big hug to Papa Chuy, Mama Nina & all those beautiful people that have gone before you. My deepest condolences to Pat and my cousins & their families. Many years ago I had the privilege of teaching Carlos' children. He was a wonderful Father as well as a kind and thoughtful man. He created a beautiful and happy home for his children and invited me to share an afternoon there.The love the family shared for one another was felt as soon as you entered his home. I send my prayers and heartfelt condolences to his wife and children.

Carlos was my landlord since 1997, when I began renting an art studio in the Ilium Building, and he even helped a crew of us rehabilitate another part of his building to become the Fulton Street Gallery. Over the decades since, Carlos was an unfailing supporter of my work and the arts generally. He was always patient and nice, and a pleasure to talk with, especially since we shared familial ties with New Mexico, and given his appreciation of my paintings which often featured a southwestern palette. Rest in peace, my friend; may our spirits meet again. Gary Masline
