Obituary of Joseph M. Talar
JOSEPH M. TALAR
Vallejo California- Joseph M. Talar of Vallejo, 96, formerly of the Capital District and the beloved husband of the late Julia (Kobylar) Talar, passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 15, 2018.
Born in Albany on August 15th 1922, Joseph was the son of the late Jacob and Sophia (Bialoncyk) Talar. He attended Christian Brothers Academy in Albany where he participated in baseball & basketball. Joseph worked for his stepfather before being drafted in the army in 1942.
He served in General Patton"s US II Corps an US Seventh Army in the fighting in Operation Torch, the Africa Campaign, the Tunisia campaign, the Sicily campaign from December 1942- October 1945 and in The Italian campaign. From Sicily in 1943, Joseph's gun team fired allied artillery shell to hit continental Europe. Finally he was in the Military Police.
Joe returned to the states and worked with his step-father. He met the love of his life Julia Kobylar. He said to his mother at first site. "I am going to marry that girl" and 7 months later they were married on September 7, 1947. They were together for 66 years until her death.
Joe was employed at Tobin Packing Company for many years and then worked at Cohoes High School until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion-Joseph Zaloga Post 1520 for over 50 years. But the time he spent with St Nicholas Church in Cohoes as a member and then President for over 10 years gave him great pleasure.
In 2008 Joe & Julia moved to northern California to be with their daughter & family. They enjoyed many sunny days and did some traveling to visit family & friends. They did go to Italy for the first time since the war.
Joe is survived by his loving daughters: Christine Erlach (Ray) of California and Diane Hamilton (Dave) of Georgia, his 4 cherished grandchildren: David (Deb), Christopher (Brianne), Amanda (Weston), and Nicole, as well as his adored great granddaughters: Ava and Chloe, grandsons Logan & Andrew along with several beloved nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased by his siblings: Anne Hunter, Stephen and John Talar, and niece Sheila Norcross.
Relatives and Friends are invited and may call on Tuesday August 21, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, with the Parastas service taking place at 6:00 pm.
A Mass of Divine Liturgy will be held on Wednesday August 22 at 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, 67 Saratoga Street, Cohoes with Fr. Terry Wasielewski officiating.
Interment will take place next to his beloved Julia in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Latham.
