Obituary of Doris A. McDermott

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
LATHAM - Her prayers have been answered, and this dear lovely lady, gentle woman is finally at rest. Doris A. McDermott, 94, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2009 in Latham at Our Lady of Hope Residence. Born in Cohoes, she was the daughter of the late George and Alberta Dion Caisse and wife of 61 years to the late John B. McDermott. Doris spent her early years in Port Schuyler, Watervliet and South Troy before moving to Latham in 1961. She worked for Montgomery Ward and then Weinberg's Women's Shop in Troy, and after moving to Latham was employed by the Boston Store until her retirement in 1977. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church in Latham before moving to St. Joseph's Apartments at Our Lady of Hope in 2002. She was an active member of the Altar Rosary Society of OLA and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Colonie Lodge #2192 BPOE, serving as chaplain from 1971 to 1972. She served on many committees and card parties for OLA, the Elks and OLH, slowing down only a few years ago. Doris never failed to offer a helping hand to family and friends; she loved crocheting, knitting, shopping - always on the lookout for treats for the kids, and making crafts for all her "kids". In her seven years with the Little Sisters she spent time helping make quilts, opening the mail, cutting up raffle tickets, and whatever she could do to assist. Doris and John loved to travel which continued in earnest after they retired, going cross-country and on several Jamborees with the ELK's and K of C in their RV - with Doris as navigator; they also spent six winters in Fla. Doris was treasured by her children, Robert (Sharlane) McDermott of Suisun City, Calif., Jackie (Mike) Caulfield of Stillwater, Dianne (Vince) DeMideo of Stillwater, Marian McDermott of Arlington, Mass., and Brian (Valerie) McDermott of Selkirk. She will also be sadly missed by her cherished grandchildren, Marc McDermott of Suisun City, Calif., Joanne (Ed) Leibert of Clifton Park, Christine (Bob) Carusone of Scotia, Amy (Marty) Mullen of Stillwater, and Rachel (Rob) Womble of Saratoga Springs, Jonathan DeMideo (Lauren Vajda) of Boston, Elizabeth (Christopher) Murray of Red Hook, Melissa (Aaron) Currado of Mechanicville, Tera (Kevin) Dolan of Albany and Lucas McDermott. Doris also leaves behind her dear great-grandchildren, Daniel (Jordana) Bryan of Buffalo, Julia Bryan (Drew Chesney) of Rotterdam, Jacob and Luke Carusone of Scotia, Tyler, Michael and Natalie Mullen of Stillwater, Travis and Paige Womble of Saratoga Springs, Kyleigh Murray of Red Hook and Gabriella Dolan of Albany. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and long time friend and neighbor, Rose Hartley. All who knew her loved her and were proud to call her friend. Doris was also predeceased by her sisters, Irene Keane and Beatrice Treleaven. Throughout her life her love of God and devotion to the Blessed Mother sustained her, and her deep faith and prayerful life was an inspiration to all who knew her; her children were especially blessed for having her as their mom. Doris's family extends their sincerest thanks to the Little Sisters, nurses, aides and entire staff for the tender loving care they gave Mom, and their thoughtfulness, hospitality and consideration they extended to the entire family through these past years and especially the past few months. You are all angels. Mom always said that Our Lady of Hope was the closest place to heaven. Funeral will be on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Hope Residence in Latham where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment in St. Jean's Cemetery in Troy. Relatives and friends may call at Our Lady of Hope Residence on Monday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions in Doris's memory may be made to Our Lady of Hope Residence 1 Jeanne Jugan Lane, Latham., NY 12110 For directions, information or to light a memory candle for the family, please visit www.dufresneandcavanaugh.com.
