ELEANOR J. WERMERT
Latham-Longtime Latham resident Eleanor Wermert passed away peacefully Sunday, December 10, half way through her 101st year of life. Eleanor was born June 14, 1917, in the New Jersey Palisades, to George Peter Flading and Anastasia Svehla Flading. After graduating from Fort Lee High School in 1934, she pursued her passion for music and art while attending Skidmore College. The Great Depression forced her to return to New York City to help support her family by working in the accounting department at the American Tobacco Company. In the late 1930's she met the love of her life, Frank Wermert, joining him to watch the Rangers win the Stanley Cup Finals in 1940, waiting for him during World War II, and marrying him in 1948, the beginning of 64 wedded years. The two were still seen dancing and holding hands well into their 90's. With children arriving in 1949, Eleanor maintained the family home while staying active in many volunteer capacities. A cub scout and girl scout leader, she also served in several volunteer leadership positions with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Home Economics Division in the 60's and 70's, worked the election polling stations each November, and was active with Vanguard supporting the Albany Symphony Orchestra. For relaxation, she enjoyed playing contract bridge and ballroom dancing with Frank, making the tango her particular specialty. She also loved to travel. She and Frank made frequent trips throughout most of the United States and many parts of Europe. But her favorite was a trip she initiated to mainland China, in 1983, many, many years before any main stream tourist activity reached that country. Eleanor also continued to play the piano beautifully, well into her late 80's. She is predeceased by her beloved Frank and her only sister Agnes. She is survived by her children, Jim (and wife Sybil) Wermert, Claire (and husband John) Higgins, and Barbara Wermert; her grandchildren, Stacey (and spouse Chris) Thompson, Brian (and wife Christina) Higgins, Catherine Higgins, and Patrick Wermert; sister-in-law Rosaura Wermert, and 20 nieces and nephews.
