LOUISE A. HOOD Latham-Louise Amell Hood, 94, a resident of Our Lady of Hope in Latham, NY, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2009 in the presence of family and friends. She led a very full, healthy, and satisfying life and brought a great deal of love, happiness and inspiration into the lives of all who knew her. She will be sorely missed and will always be an endless source of fond memories. Louise, a naturalized citizen, was born in 1915 in Cornwall, Ontario, one of three children of Louis and Margaret Tyo Amell. She moved to the United States and married John Philip Hood in 1938. They lived in Granville NY where they raised a daughter and four sons. She was predeceased by her husband John, brother Francis Amell, and son-in-law Dirk Visker. She is survived by her sister Vernice Russell of Kingston, Ontario; daughter Veronica Visker of Latham and sons Edward (Jo) of Wilmington, NY; James (Bill) of Jersey City, NJ; Paul (Carla) of Latham; Philip (Jean) of Winchester, VA. She was a very proud grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of twelve. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. While in Granville, she was an active communicant of St. Mary's Church and helped lead the Catholic Daughters of America for many years. As all who knew her would attest, she lived her faith every day, giving unselfishly and always willing to help, no matter what the task. Louise was an accomplished seamstress whose skills and creativity kept her in constant demand. While she struggled for years with the difficulties and pain of scoliosis, sewing was her passion. She always had what seemed like a boundless source of energy. She took a great deal of satisfaction in helping others. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 30 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Our Lady of Hope residence on Jeanne Jugan Lane in Latham. The funeral mass will follow in the Chapel at Our Lady of Hope at 1:00 PM. Louise will be interred next to her husband, John, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Middle Granville, NY. The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the Little Sisters of the Poor and their dedicated staff for the wonderful care and loving atmosphere they provided for Louise and her family. Donations may be made in her name to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1 Jeanne Jugan Lane, Latham, NY 12110.
