David A. Cavanaugh Obituary
David A. Cavanaugh, 82, of East Greenbush, NY, passed away on May 1, 2026, at the hospice unit at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
David was born in Troy, NY, on February 23, 1944, to Joseph T. Cavanaugh Jr. and Mary M. (Carey) Cavanaugh. He graduated from Shaker High School in 1962 and went on to earn an associate degree from Hudson Valley Community College. Over the years, he owned and operated several businesses, including piano, organ, and furniture stores, before going to spend more than 40 years working in the HVAC and building automation industry.
As a young man, David served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, where he met his future wife from Austria, Waltraud A. Sammer. They shared 55 years of marriage, building a life, centered on family, faith, and devotion to one another.
David found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. He had a gift for loving and uplifting those around him and was known for his remarkable sense of humor. A natural storyteller, he delighted in making others laugh. He had a deep interest in family history and genealogy, and he took great pride in caring for his home and property, creating a special place where his grandchildren could play and make lasting memories.
A devoted member of his church, David served in many callings and was a congregation leader in Albany for many years, offering guidance, support and friendship to those around him. HIs faith was central to his life; he loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, and spent countless hours studying the Scriptures, drawing strength and wisdom from God's word.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Waltraud A. Sammer; his daughters, Lisa M. (Lance) Bohne, Catherine M. (Jeffrey) Bateman, and Heidi M. (Michael) Butcher; his son, Michael D. Cavanaugh; his sister, Joanne Bleau; and his cherished grandchildren: Emily, Rachel, Ethan, Benjamin, Joseph, and Adam Bohne; Anna, Benjamin, Rex, Mack, Cade, and Mary Bateman; and Alexander, Abigail, Anne, and Jacob Butcher.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph T. Cavanaugh Jr. and Mary M. (Carey) Cavanaugh, and his brother, Joseph T. Cavanaugh III.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 7 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, NY. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 411 Loudon Road, Loudonville, NY.
