Hawley Christian Zwahlen Obituary

LATHAM - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hawley Christian Zwahlen, age 75. Hawley passed on to eternal life on April 22, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Hawley was born November 27, 1950 in Utica, NY, son of the late Dr. W. Hartley and Audree Zwahlen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Whitney Zwahlen and sister Carole Kidd.

Hawley is survived by his partner of 39 years Christine Nougeim, two children Dr. Courtney Zwahlen and Jacque (Heather) Zwahlen; his much-loved grandchildren Sara, Jessica, Lucy and Matt; his brothers Hartley (Patty), Heath (Carin) and his amazing nieces, nephews and the mother of his children Margaret Dezee. He will also be dearly missed by his cousins, his extended family, the Smiths of Westmoreland, NY, and Christine's cousins along with all of his friends, especially Jim and Debbie Sarner.

Hawley grew up in New Hartford, NY and spent his teen years at school in New Hampshire and Lake Placid. He later graduated from Syracuse University. He and his family moved to the Albany area, where he worked in the private banking sector for much of his career. He retired from US Trust in 2009. He had the good fortune to travel extensively but primarily enjoyed the Adirondacks, their home in Cape Cod and cross-country train trips. Hawley enjoyed all family gatherings and especially the many celebrations & reunions at Heath and Carin's home in central NY.

With Hawley's passing we've lost a living dictionary. He also had a love and knowledge of history, including American history, extensive world history, women's history and everything in between. His hobbies included golf, studying French, cheffing, reading, investment research and being funny. The first half of his life he also enjoyed camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and being funny. He was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church.

The family wishes to thank Reverend Brian Kelly for being at the right place at the right time and administering the Anointing of the Sick to Hawley, as well as RN Adam and Chaplain Cylon of The Community Hospice for the comfort they provided.

All who knew and loved Hawley are invited to join in celebrating his life at a funeral mass at St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Rd., Latham on Friday, June 19th at 10:30 am.
