Latham – Edwin “Skip” A. Springstead, 93 died peacefully holding his wife’s hand on
Friday, April 10, 2026, at Schenectady Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing.
Born in Spring Valley, New York on August 14, 1932, he was the son of Edwin Springstead and Charlotte Anderson Springstaed and the loving husband of 67 years to Florence Pettograsso Springstead. “Skip” graduated from Brockport State University, where he served as the captain for both the track and cross-country teams. He also served in the United States Army stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Edwin was a longtime teacher and coach at Shaker High School for over 50 years. He loved to teach and coach his athletes. Nothing made him happier than having his stopwatch and clipboard in hand while watching his athletes compete. His teams won many championships including two New York State Championships. The first was in 1962 for Colonie Central High School and again in 2010 for Shaker High School.
Skip was a member and past president of the Albany Curling Club; an avid golfer and never missed the opportunity to watch the North Carolina Tar Heels. Coach Springstead’s presence, guidance and wisdom positively affected everyone he came in contact with. He had a huge impact on many and will greatly be missed.
Survivors include his loving wife Florence and his son Michael J. Springstead Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday April 18, 2026, at 9:00 am at St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Road, Latham. Relatives and friends are invited to call Friday April 17, 2026, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Road, Latham, NY. Interment to follow at Our Lady of Angels, Albany.
