Hugh G. Fitzgerald Obituary

COLONIE — Hugh George Fitzgerald passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Born on February 5, 1941, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Bennett) and Patrick Fitzgerald. Raised in Watervliet, he graduated from LaSalle Institute and Siena College.

Hugh worked in the retail industry as store manager for several local retailers including Montgomery Ward, Caldor, Zayre and Raymour and Flanigan. He ended his career in sales at Mooradians.

Hugh was a devout Catholic, a strong and sometimes frustrated supporter of the Mets, and very patriotic, with a strong sense of responsibility for and dedication to family and friends. He cherished his family and his Irish heritage, loved telling a good story, and had a great sense of humor. His extensive interests included golf, reading, the study of history, art, traditional pop music, jazz, gardening and cooking, always experimenting with new recipes. Traveling gave him tremendous pleasure, and he was always looking for and planning new adventures to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, Florida, Canada, the Caribbean and the West Coast, recording his many travels in extensive journals.

Hugh is survived by his wife of 22 years, Julia (Hasko) and was brother to Patrick (late Janet) Fitzgerald, Mary Hockford and Sally Fitzgerald. He was brother-in-law to Joan Hasko, Joanna and James Mazzone and the late John Hasko.

He was the loving uncle of John (Barbara) Fitzgerald, Patrick (Sheila) Fitzgerald, Elizabeth (William) DiMento, Michael (late Kathleen) Hockford, Lori (late Mark) Bruno, Christine Hockford and Matthew (Kari) Williams, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital at www.shrinerschildrens.org, Boys Town www.boystown.org or a charity of your choice.
