Mary A. Uerz Obituary

LATHAM - Mary A. (Gillissie) Uerz, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, entered into eternal life on January 29, 2026.

Born on April 12, 1934 in Brockton, MA, Mary was the daughter of Harold and Catherine (Keohane) Gillissie and was raised in Utica, NY. She married her husband Walter Uerz in 1954 and accompanied him to Augusta, GA while he served in the US Army at the end of the Korean Conflict. After Walt's military service, Mary cared for their growing family in Utica, Albany, and then Loudonville as Walt held various management positions with the NY Telephone Company.

Mary was a parishioner at St. Pius X Church in Loudonville for over fifty years and served with various ministries during that time, including the school library committee, the Altar Rosary Society, and the PEP seniors group. Although Mary was employed by Kelly Services and New York State at times, her proudest accomplishments were as a homemaker and mother; raising their six children, managing their household and creating family memories.

For over sixty years, Mary was the quintessential family hostess for holidays at home and summer celebrations at their lake house in Chestertown. After Walt's retirement, they enjoyed many travels, exploring numerous European countries, enjoying winters in Florida, and cherishing vacations with their children and grandchildren.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 70 years, Walter; her parents, and two sisters. She is survived by her six children: Robert (Lori) of South Kingstown, RI; Jeffrey (Maureen) of Mechanicsville, VA; David (Kathleen) of Ontario, NY; Laurie (Michael Baschwitz) of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; Suzanne (John Bell) of Bloomfield, NY; and Julie (Timothy Marion) of Wynantskill, NY; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mary is also survived by her sister Joan Marquard of Loudonville.
