LATHAM – Gerald "Gerry" P. Kerwin, 84, of Latham, passed away suddenly at his home on June 26, 2025. A beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Gerry leaves behind a legacy of love and a sense of humor that will live on in all those who were fortunate to know him.
Born and raised in Troy, New York, Gerry was the son of the late Lawrence W. and Catherine (Mullin) Kerwin. One of eight children in a close-knit family, he was a proud graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy where he served as class president.
Gerry served honorably in the US Air Force from 1962 to 1966. He continued his commitment to public service by dedicating his 36-year career to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services in Albany, retiring in 1996 as Chief of Identification Operations.
A communicant of St. Pius X Church in Loudonville, Gerry found joy in the simple pleasures of life—cheering for his beloved Boston Red Sox (and playfully yet rigorously debating their rivalry with the Yankees), celebrating his proud Irish heritage, and tending to his extensive flower garden and collection of potted plants during the warmer months. Through most of his adult life, vacations to Cape Cod were a major part of summer. Later in life, spending time with family on "the cape" seemed to take on even more significance and something he looked forward to for months in advance. It was truly his home-away-from-home and the place where he found peace and happiness and created countless family memories. He was devoted to staying connected with his extended family regardless of distance.
Above all, Gerry cherished his family. He is survived by his four loving children: Gerald T. (Michele) Kerwin, Michael J. Kerwin, Kathleen M. (Scott Cairns) Kerwin, and Jaime Cornell. He was a proud grandfather to Emma Zwicklbauer, Max Zwicklbauer, Makayla Veshia, Xander Kerwin, and Evelyn Kerwin. Also survived by his siblings: Maureen Jerome, Kathryn Francis, Janice Renna, Dennis Kerwin, William Kerwin, and Stephen Kerwin; his former wife and longtime friend, Mary (Connors) Kerwin; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss him dearly.
In addition to his parents, Gerry is predeceased by his brother, Lawrence Kerwin and a nephew, Lawrence Kerwin.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, from 4 to 6 PM at The Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 3 at 10 AM at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumitie Road, Loudonville, with Rev. James Walsh officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
