Bernard Joseph Phillips Obituary

BERNARD J. PHILLIPS

LATHAM - Bernard "Bernie" Joseph Phillips passed away on June 15, 2025 at the age of 64 after a long illness, throughout which Bernie never lost his positive attitude and sense of humor. Raised in Delmar, he was the son of Mary and Joseph Phillips and was a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School, SUNY Potsdam, and the College of St.Rose.

After working several years providing direct services to individuals with developmental disabilities, Bernie earned his master's degree in education and began his 30-year teaching career, starting in special education with BOCES. Before long, he pursued his true passion, earning his certification in physics. As a physics teacher at Schenectady High School, Bernie quickly earned a reputation for his infectious enthusiasm and deep love of the subject. He spent time outside of work creating his own creative and engaging demos for the students. Everything from a bed of nails to explain the distribution of force to a lab where students would slide down the halls in socks and calculate their own friction. Bernie was the kind of teacher students remembered fondly and looked forward to learning from. He inspired students to pursue further study in the STEM fields, many of whom remained in contact with him.

After retiring from Schenectady High School, Bernie began officiating high school volleyball and track & field, two sports he had loved since his youth. He and his wife also established a scholarship for Schenectady High School students pursuing STEM studies, a reflection of his lifelong dedication to education and empowering students to reach their fullest potential.

Bernie was an avid runner and bicyclist, completing many multi-day long-distance rides. Most recently, he enjoyed riding with a local bicycling group known as the "FROGS" (Former Runners on Gears). He was a lifelong New England Patriots fan and also enjoyed college sports, attending several NCAA championship games with his friends. He loved listening to music and attending live concerts, ranging from the Boston Pops to the Foo Fighters. Bernie took great pride in building the family home and completing countless woodworking projects. His craftsmanship is evident throughout the Phillips home.

Most of all, Bernie was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. His sons were his biggest pride and joy. He cherished time spent with his family, whether it was a weekend bike ride, day trip to a science museum or one of many adventurous family trips. He especially enjoyed relaxing by the ocean in Rhode Island with his family on their annual summer vacation.

Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Agnes Phillips (Roselli), sons Nicholas and Alexander, mother Mary Phillips, sister Elizabeth Phillips, brothers Mark Phillips and Dan Phillips, mother-in-law Lena Roselli, father-in-law Anthony Roselli Sr, brothers-in-law Dominick Roselli (Linda) and Anthony Roselli Jr (Taryn) and sisters-in law Lena Ferrari (David) and Anny Phillips, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his father Joseph Bernard Phillips.
