MICHAEL G. EGELSTON
LATHAM - Michael Grant Egelston passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, after a brief illness, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was 75.
Born on August 23, 1949, Mike lived a full and meaningful life centered on family, service, and a sharp sense of humor that never failed to lighten a room. He always said his greatest accomplishment was his children, and he took immense pride in his role as a husband, father, and "Papa." He was the ultimate girl dad—supportive, involved, and always there when it mattered.
In 1972, he married his college sweetheart, Mary Ellen, after meeting at SUNY Oneonta. Together they built a strong, happy marriage filled with travel, laughter, and decades of shared memories. They settled in Latham in 1979, where they raised their family and became a part of the local community.
Mike served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1975 and went on to work for New York State until his retirement in 2004. He embraced his hobbies throughout his life—reading, playing chess, listening to music, watching sports (especially the New York Giants and Yankees), and spending sunny days at the Colonie Town Pool. More than anything, he loved being with his family—whether it was a big holiday, a backyard barbecue, or a casual get-together. He was always the first to the party and the last to leave.
Mike is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellen, and their four daughters: Susan (Matthew) Rys, Karen (Kevin) Moughan, Kathleen (William) Pickett, and Kristen Egelston. He was a proud Papa to eight grandchildren: Abby, Dan, Elizabeth, Jimmy, Tommy, Liam, Caroline, and Landon.
He was predeceased by his parents, Grant and Norma Egelston. Mike was the oldest of ten siblings: Patrick (Donna) Egelston, Janie (Lou) Zanella, Bill (Linda) Egelston, Dennis (Judy) Egelston, Sandy (Bart) Avery, Nancy (late David) Langdon, John (Mickey) Egelston, Amy (Mike) Augustine, and Beth (David) Carpenter. He is also survived by countless nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Albany Medical Center staff on E5 for their kindness, compassion, and care over the last three weeks.
Mike's legacy is one of loyalty, laughter, and love of family. He will be missed by many, remembered often, and celebrated always. Mike's final words of wisdom would be spend time with your family, enjoy the day – and as he always said, "Take it easy."
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, June 17th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at The Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Rd., Latham.
