MATTHEW F. GEORGE JR.

ROTTERDAM - Matthew Frederick George, Jr., 79 of Rotterdam, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Born in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late Matthew F. and Lois E. (Elliott) George Sr.

A lifelong resident of the Capital Region, Matthew was a history buff at heart. He taught history for many years at the Draper Middle School in Rotterdam. A Civil War enthusiast, Matthew was an active and passionate member of the Capital District Civil War Round Table, est. 1984. He could often be found dedicating his time, energy, and talents to Civil War reenactments as a Union soldier both locally and around the country with Gettysburg ranking as one of his favorites.

Matthew was also an avid photographer and enjoyed bowling as well as baseball, coaching into his retirement. In his early years he played for the local baseball team, the Latham Lancers.

Survivors include his sister Barbara G. Ettrich, nephew Steven M. Ettrich, and niece Heidi Ettrich as well as several cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, June 16th, 2025 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at The Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham.

Interment will be private.
