JOAN M. MASTRIANI
SCHENECTADY - Joan Maude Mastriani, 88, of Schenectady, NY and Treasure Island, FL, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Eddy Village Green Nursing Home, in Cohoes, NY, with loving family and caring staff, by her side. She had been a resident there since 2023.
Joan and her identical twin June were born on September 4,1936, in Schenectady, NY, to the late Fred and Mildred (Leschorn) Jenne. Joan graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1954 where she met and married her high school sweetheart, and love of her life, the late Paul Louis Mastriani, on October 7, 1956. Her obituary picture which appeared in the October 13, 1955, Schenectady Gazette announcing their engagement, had adorned their family home's fireplace mantel for the entirety of their life together. They had been married for 60 years, at the time of her husband Paul's passing, in 2017. She was a lifelong resident of Schenectady, NY, but briefly lived in Buxton, NC, with her husband, in their early married years, while her husband was stationed in the Navy. Joan and her husband returned to the Schenectady area where they raised their family of three children, Diana (Mastriani) Preiss, Paula (Mastriani) Burnor, and Paul J. Mastriani. Years later they would return to the Buxton area with their three children and a dog in tow, for summer vacation, camping along the Hatteras coast, and thus began their annual vacation tradition for many years to come. Joan was active in her children's school activities, serving as Brownie Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother, in addition to organizing PTA activities. Joan returned to the workforce where she worked for the State of NY for 15 years as a Corporate Tax clerk, retiring in 1995. Joan and her husband retired to Treasure Island, FL, where she continued to enjoy sewing projects and fishing with her husband. Upon the birth of her grandchildren, Joan traveled across the country to welcome both Lindsay (Preiss) Hernandez Aguilar and later Nathaniel Preiss, to the family, showering them with all her love and attention. She loved her grandchildren dearly. Maintaining dual residency in Schenectady, Joan and her husband returned to the Schenectady area upon onset of her husband's illness, to be closer to family. Joan created many beautiful lifelong memories for her family. Memories of car trips and camping adventures, personally sewed outfits and Halloween costumes, the nightly family dinner table of delicious meals she prepared (except liver and peas- somehow, she knew they would be hidden under her children's plates), picnics and swimming, and her love and rescue of animals, are but a few which her family holds dear. As an identical twin, the love for her twin sister June (Jenne) Hoffman was deep, and that bond remained so, for their entire lives, even as their lives separated them geographically. All these memories of Joan's devotion to her husband and family will be cherished forever and she will be missed more than words can ever express.
Joan leaves behind her beloved children; Diana (Mastriani) Preiss (former spouse Steven Preiss) of Howes Cave, NY, Paula (Jim) Burnor of Latham, NY, and Paul J. (Colleene Abair) Mastriani, of Rochester, NY, two grandchildren; Lindsay (Jose Eduardo) Hernandez Aguilar of Desert Hot Springs, CA and Nathaniel (Alicia Walker) Preiss of Palm Springs, CA, and two great grandchildren; Ezra Stefano Hernandez Aguilar and Priya Preiss. She also leaves behind her sisters; June Hoffman of Pinewood Square Assisted Living, Goose Creek, SC, and Nancee Jenne of Hampton, NH, two nieces; Katy (Dennis) O'Mara of Goose Creek, SC, and Colleen Hoffman of Lynn, MA, two nephews; Shawn (Lynn) Hoffman of Rochester, NH, and Brien (Carol) Hoffman of Rochester, NH and several cousins, to include Theda Beseth Fuller of Swan Lake, NY. She was predeceased by her husband Paul Louis Mastriani, her brother Lawrence Jenne, her sister Carol (Jenne) Lewis, and her niece Maureen (Hoffman) Moquin.
A special thank you to the direct care staff and nursing staff of Eddy Village Green, House 14. They treated our mother as family and provided her with compassionate and caring attention during her time as a resident and in her final days. Everyone there loved Joan's bright blue eyes, long hair and big warm smile. We will be forever grateful to them. Thank you also to Surekha Varkey, NP, of Eddy Village Green and the Community Hospice staff for their kindness and support.
