THOMAS J. CAIRNS
ALBANY - Thomas J. Cairns, 77 of Albany, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 24th, 2025 at St. Peters Hospice Inn with his family at his side. Born on May 23rd, 1947 in Albany, Tom was the son of the late John and Margaret (Dunn) Cairns. He attended Vincentian Institute in Albany, Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD, and SUNY Albany where he attained his masters degree.
A devoted community member and successful residential and commercial real estate broker, Tom leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience and an unforgettable sense of humor. Tom's adult life was dedicated to building a thriving career in Real Estate, making lasting connections along the way. His integrity, dedication, and natural charm made him a trusted professional and a beloved colleague.
Beyond his career, Tom was a friend of Bill W. for over 35 years, a trusted servant offering support, wisdom and encouragement to those walking the path of recovery. His generosity of spirit changed lives, and his example of strength and perseverance was an inspiration to many. Tom was also a dedicated therapy dog handler. He and his canine companions (Tucker & Cooper) would often visit local schools, nursing homes, and hospitals in an effort to spread joy and comfort to those in need.
Known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, Tom had a way of bringing light to every room he entered. Whether sharing stories, cracking jokes, or simply offering a warm smile, he made the world brighter for all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his brother, Reverend John Cairns, his sister, Sister Patricia Cairns CSJ, nieces and nephews James (Mary) Lozano, Sharon Lozano Montagne, Michael Lozano, Lynne (Bill) Lozano Commisso, Lisa (Dennis) Lozano Kruzinski, and Erin (John) Lozano Odorisio, as well as twentyone grandnieces and nephews and eight great-grandnieces and nephews. He is also survived by a wide and far-reaching circle of friends and those who were fortunate enough to call him a mentor. In addition to his parents, Tom is predeceased by his brother Bob Cairns, sister Margaret Cairns Lozano, and nephew Gary Lozano.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025 from from 4-6 PM at The Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Rd., Latham. A prayer service and celebration of his life will immediately follow the calling hours.
