Obituary of Edward Joseph Skelly
EDWARD J. SKELLY
Latham - Edward Joseph Skelly, 88 of Latham, husband of Lois V. (Brown) Skelly, passed away suddenly at his home in Latham, NY, on March 12, 2025.
In addition to being the devoted husband of Lois, Edward was the beloved father of Kathleen Krzynowek (David), Frances Skelly (Thompson), Michael Skelly (Sherilynne), and Timothy Skelly (Laurie). He was a cherished grandfather to James Callahan (Christine), Daniel Callahan, Megan Conley (Daniel), Victoria Krzynowek, Emma Skelly, Cathryn Skelly, Grace Skelly, and Jordan Skelly as well as step grandchildren Kyle and Brian. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Maeve, Abigail, James, and Kieran, and step great-grandchild Lincoln. He was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Edward Skelly.
Born and raised in Albany, NY, Edward's early education began at Our Lady of Angels Grammar School, followed by Vincentian Institute. He then attended Manhattan College, where he developed a deep love for learning—a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. A voracious reader, he was often immersed in multiple books at once, demonstrating his insatiable curiosity and knowledge of a wide range of subjects. This curiosity would lead to an eventual love of "Jeopardy", which he would, more often than not, answer the questions correctly.
Edward honorably served his country in the US Army and Army Reserves before embarking on a long career with the New York State Department of Mental Health, from which he retired.
Beyond his professional life, Edward had many loves. He was an ardent supporter of his college basketball team, the Manhattan College Jaspers, and had a deep appreciation for music, particularly Irish music, classical, and jazz. He had an incredible memory and a sharp, sarcastic sense of humor that kept those around him on their toes. He was a lover of history, a connoisseur of old movies, and never turned down a good, cold Dr. Pepper. But above all, his greatest joy was his family. To those who knew him, he was the smartest man they ever met—a true wellspring of wisdom, humor, and love.
