I am very fortunate to have Manang Mimi for a sister in-law. She was my brother’s wife but I considered her my own flesh & blood. She was bright, thoughtful, caring, a confidant & a friend. She was loving & generous, jumped at any chance to throw a family party. Among the big family reunions that she & my brother hosted, was Memorial Day weekend (that usually fell on her birthday). Gene would grill porterhouse steaks and Manang Mi would be very busy preparing dishes with the help of other relatives who were learning her cooking secrets. She was a gourmet chef and had she not chosen to be a physician, Martha Stewart would have some serious competition. She shared some recipes and I will think of her every time I prepare her dishes. Christmas was another big holiday at their home. We stayed up till midnight on Christmas eve, albeit some would take a short nap before “midnight snack” or Noche Buena, a Filipino tradition. We would have freshly prepared hot chocolate, stollen bread, ham, cheese & fruits. Through these celebrations, everyone learned that family is something to celebrate.
Manang Mi loved gardening. She planted beautiful flowers early in the Spring, so that by Memorial Day, they would all be in full bloom.
When COVID struck, we couldn’t visit as often as we would’ve liked. We looked forward to being able to see each other again but it wasn’t meant to be. Phone calls, our only option, kept us in touch. To end our phone calls, I’ve always said, “I love you.” And she always answered, “I love you, too.” She knew how much she is cherished & loved, and now that she’s gone, that’s all that matters.

I remember how you always enjoyed having fresh flowers in the home and in your garden. This photo from Sept. 11 of a Minerva Amaryllis bulb stored dry and in the dark from last year's season, (miraculously) sprouted from its dormant state around Sept. 8. It has grown 4 inches, and reminds me of my dear Manang Mimi.

I am sorry to hear about Auntie Mimi. But she is now at a better place in God's loving arms and with Uncle Sonny. I remember her as a kind and generous woman who accepted me and Lito into their home during our visit in 2009. She will surely be missed by all of us.

It's so sad to learn that Auntie Mimi passed away. She was a good person and always welcomed me and family to her home, with lots of food, reminiscing with relatives in the States, music, etc.. I will not forget the time that Uncle Sonny and Auntie brought us to Niagara Falls, where we stayed at a hotel nearby for a few days. It was sooo cold. We had lots of fun. Thank you Auntie Mimi. I also remember Auntie Mimi helping, in her own quite and simple way, relatives and friends who wanted to seek "greener pastures" in the USA. We will miss her. She is now with Uncle Sonny.

We will miss her dearly and share the sorrow of her sons, Ronald, Gene and James, their families and grandchildren. For decades, Manang Mimi welcomed all of us to her home and hosted grand family reunions, everyone memorable. She never missed sending loving greetings on holidays and special occasions, and frequently inquired about the well-being of relatives, especially those living far away. She has joined her husband, our brother Manong Sonny, in Heaven.

To the family of Dr. Minerva S. Bruno-Racela
I am so sorry for your loss. I met your mom at Price Chopper in Loudonville. She was one of my favorite customers and if I was on register she made sure I checked her out. She was always so friendly and always made sure to ask how I was doing. She had that personality that was glowing. I am extending my prayers and thoughts to the family.
