STEPHEN KOTANSKY

Watervliet- Stephen Kotansky, 89 of Watervliet, passed away suddenly on Wednesday February 24 at his home.

Born in Watervliet, on October 28, 1920, he was a resident of Watervliet for most of his life. It was on May 2, 1955 that he married the former Elizabeth "Betty" Sheehan and the two shared a blessed union of almost 55 years together. He served his country during World War II in the Navy and with the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC.

He was employed as an Engineering Designer in the Large Steam Turbine Dept. at G.E. in Schenectady for 40 years, retiring in 1981

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Watervliet, The American Society of Metals, G.E. Turbine Supervisor Assoc. and the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers. He was also active with many Capital District amateur radio organizations as an amateur radio operator.

Stephen is survived by his wife Elizabeth, 2 daughters; M. Katherine (Mark) Kennedy of Niskayuna and Jean A. (Gary) Brooks of Fayetteville, NY; 5 grandchildren; Steve, Brian & Keegan Kennedy and Cassia & Olivia Brooks, as well as his 2 sisters; Anna Budin of Margaretville & Elizabeth Sickles of Schenectady.

He is predeceased by his brother; Max Kotansky and his sister Julia Jabian.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph's of Carondolet: Development office, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Latham, NY 12110.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday (today) from 4-6 pm at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, Ltd., 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 am at St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Road, Latham. Fr. Francis DuBois will officiate.

Interment will be in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cemetery, Colonie.

Dear Jean and family, I am so sorry to hear the news about Steve. He was stubborn 'til the end - I guess that was part of what made him tick. But that heavy snow yesterday - oi! I only met Steve once, but I know that he and Betty created an incredible daughter, Jean, who must have received half of her genes from Steve - so he must have had some remarkable qualities.
